My name is August, and I am a software engineer and recent graduate from the University of Calgary with degrees in software engineering and commerce.

My experience as a developer includes work in the telecom and financial industries, a short stint in contractual work, and finally a position within the space sector.

I am always looking to learn and experiment within my career and personally & currently pursing new work.

Work Experience

Magnestar

Software Engineer | August 2023 - July 2024


Magnestar Inc. is a burgeoning space startup located in Toronto which focuses on streamlining how spectrum is managed in space.

Responsibilities and Accomplishments:

  • Lead developer for a Laravel web application where I implement UI, backend, cloud, and DB functionality.
  • Introduced Scrum/Agile management, static analysis tooling, & new branching strategies for our GitLab projects.
  • Optimized page load times by 60% by converting it to an SPA and introducing additional caching techniques.
  • Maintaining the prod PostgreSQL & Redis databases and devising architecture solutions for multiple datasources.
  • Demoing the product to stakeholders, onboarding clients, pitching at tradeshows, and working on R&D proposals.
  • Building a interface between Laravel and Python simulation code in an AWS cloud compute architecture.

My time at MS involved working as a developer within their backend, front-end, and devops environments to help build their platform Shareworks which is a equity management platform. I worked there for 16 months and worked with a breadth of technologies including but not limited to: React, Spring, Ansible, Jenkins, K6, and Docker.

BroadCast Controls Inc.

Software Engineering Intern | May 2020 - August 2020


During my time at BroadCast Controls Inc., I created a C# utility to control Harmonic NMX video/audio encoders via the SCTE-104 and REST protocols. I worked there for a brief two months in order to aid Telus Communications with transitioning some internal services from SOAP to JSON protocols.

Software Engineering Contractor | April 2023 - May 2023


  • Built a React, Spring full-stack app to allow real-time monitoring of subway train movements for use in subway window ad projections.
  • The app acts as a REST API based liaison between multiple systems of embedded LED projectors within subway tunnels and an ad auctioning site so that companies can purchase real-time ad space to be projected on subway car windows during transit.

Industry Projects

Telus LTE Bandwidth Throttling

September 2022 - April 2023


Completed work with Telus Communications Inc. to develop strategies to throttle LTE video traffic to reduce network load during peak hours as my final engineering capstone project. The project is 8 months long and involves GNS3, python, and a fair amount of network configuring in different Linux environments.

Finished work with an international team of 7 business students from four countries to investigate and formulate a business plan for Eco Blu, a B2B clothing manufacteur located within Brazil, in collaboration with X-Culture.

Orrery

November 2022


A small orrery which simulates all major planetary bodies of the solar system, including the moon. Writen in C++ using OpenGL.
